January 17: Operation Desert Storm Begins | What Happened Today In History?

Dear Humanity,

Today you protected the freedom of those who could not defend themselves. We showed that we will come to the aid of the bullied, to fight for their freedom when they couldn’t, no matter how big or small…

What Happened During Operation Desert Storm?

On January 17, 1991, Operation Desert Storm kicked off. After Saddam Hussien of Iraq invaded the smaller country of Kuwait to seize its oil, a coalition was organized to liberate Kuwait. Today, they kicked off the liberation of Kuwait with massive airstrikes. It only took 100 hours for ground troops to liberate Kuwait. 697,000 US troops were involved, but only 300 lost their lives.
